The Furness Theatre Organ Project
We are a group of people with a shared passion for the theatre organ. Our intention has been to fully restore the ex Rex Cinema, Stratford, London Wurlitzer Organ and install it in the Royalty Cinema, Bowness-on-Windermere. This is now a real jewel in the crown for Cumbria as
we understand that there are no longer any other Wurlitzer organs situated in a working cinema in the whole of the UK. Now restored, a new chapter can begin for this organ and cinema, the combination of which will give the audience a unique and nostalgic experience.
The cinema's 1927 auditorium houses the organ console, whilst out of view are the understage pipe chambers which produce all the sounds from a trumpet fanfare to a birds chirrup!
This wonderful 1927 vintage Wurlitzer Organ can once again be heard, played by a small team of organists before some films. Concerts, performed by theatre organists from around the country, will also be a regular feature in 2013 (see Latest News & Events).
